School Safety K9 Program

We pride ourselves in working in conjunction with school administration and existing deterrence programs to help foster a safe, drug and contraband-free learning environment for all.

Every student and staff member should feel safe and secure at school. Drug possession/distribution, contraband deterrence and prevention is a key piece of any school safety protocol. Our School Safety K9 Program is set up to be a friendly and non intimidating, yet effective presence with a focus on keeping contraband off campus through inspections and education.

When it comes to protecting schools from drug possession/distribution, explosives, and firearms; Utilizing consistent school safety sweeps is important.  Our friendly single-purpose K9s and handlers are trained to search entire campuses including:

lockers

classrooms

school buses

extracurricular events

surrounding grounds

We can conduct searches during or after school. We accommodate schools of all sizes, public and private.

We start by encouraging school officials to place signs at each school to make the presence of our K9 teams known on the premises and update students, their families, and staff of the change. Days following this we like to host a short all school assembly where school officials can introduce our K9 teams, followed by a short demonstration of the detection capabilities of our K9s and handlers. Students and staff will also have an opportunity to ask any questions they may have as well as an opportunity to meet the K9 team assigned to the facility.

Adding a K9 team in a school has been proven to be an effective deterrent alone or when combined with active patrols of the grounds, metal detectors, school

resource officers/ security staff, solid access controls, and video surveillance.

Our K9 teams are an extremely effective and comprehensive solution.

Our K9s assigned to these facilities actively train in live school environments to ensure they are absolutely safe around students, yet have the focus to work effectively. There is no need to “lockdown” a campus or prevent students from being in the vicinity of the working K9. The visibility factor is a big piece of the deterrence.

Our goal is not to scare students, but instead to be a positive presence to help everyone on campus feel safe.

Commonly inspected areas include:

  • Student vehicles
  • Backpacks or belongings in the classroom
  • Athletic/PE locker rooms and students lockers
  • Restrooms
  • Gym
  • Library
  • Tech/shop areas
  • Perimeter and outdoor areas
  • Academic lockers

In addition, we are available for inspections of belongings going on overnight trips, dances, prom, sports/athletic events, and any other activities outside of the regular school day upon request.

If a K9 detects something in any of the searched places, the handler notifies a designated staff member that the K9 has found something. If contraband is found, the disciplinary process is enforced by school officials according to school policies. The school resource officer or local authorities may be notified by school administration for possible ticketing or any further legal action, but that's not the intent of the searches.

The searches can uncover substance addictions, self medicating habits, a mental health crisis, and more.  This allows school officials the opportunity to help those in those circumstances.

We understand the fears associated with drugs and youth and even mass shootings. Drills are a great practice but K9 detections teams provide an additional layer of protection needed to boost current school wide protocols and increase long term school safety within a community.

Our detection dog services are flexible and affordable and allow school districts the opportunity to create a School Safety K9 Program that works best for their particular situations.

Our single purpose detection K9s that we utilize are not only effective but are extremely social and indicate with only a passive alert. This way of notifying their handler, eliminates any concerns about safety and damage to personal property.

We encourage all school administrators to call us for a free consultation today!

Recent School Safety Studies Have Shown:

  • 35.1% of high schoolers have used an illegal substance in the past year

  • 21.3% of 12th graders have used an illegal substance in the last 30 days

  • 16.6% of 10th graders have used an illegal substance in the last 30 days

  • 81% of 12th graders say it would be easy to get an illegal substance at school

  • Since the shooting at Columbine High School in 1999, more than 338,000 students in the U.S. have experienced gun violence at school

  • Guns are the leading cause of death among American children and teens. 1 out of 10 gun deaths are age 19 or younger

  • Guns used in about 68% of gun-related incidents at schools were taken from the home, a friend or a relative

  • Research has shown that exposure to drugs or violence during adolescence contributes to mental health problems, which decrease the likelihood of high school graduation and increase risky behaviors
